A German Humboldt Scientist Alumni Award winner and Professor of Plant Physiology, Professor Odunayo Clement Adebooye, has proposed the establishment of a National Under-utilized Plants Research Institute.
He made this statement while delivering the third inaugural lecture titled, ‘Exploring the Vegetables’ World: Nutraceutical and Physiological Investigations’, at the Main Campus of Osun State University. He said, ‘There are several vegetables which are eaten by only the poor rural dwellers which I often refer to as “food of our fathers” because most urban elites do not know them and possibly have never seen them before. This therefore calls for a re-orientation of the research mandate in our Universities and Research Institutes.’ He then recommended the establishment of a National Under-utilized Plants Research Institute (NUPRI) by the Federal Government of Nigeria.
A Barrister of the Supreme Court of Nigeria and Professor of Business Law as well as Provost of the College of Law, Osun State University, Professor Olayiwola Owoade Oladele, has said that the Nigerian Securities Regulatory System has failed.
The Barrister made this assertion while delivering the second inaugural lecture of Osun State University titled, ‘How Secure Are Securities?’ at the Main Campus, Osogbo. According to him, ‘the Nigerian securities regulatory system has failed partially to keep numerous corporate investors informed of the material securities information and the rights that attach to the corporate securities that they have invested in against the backdrop of the propensity of securities issuers to conceal and mystify material information.’ He added that the regulatory system has not solved the problem of informing retail investors who, more often than not, lack the means and technical ability to have, understand and utilise material securities information.
The first Professor to be appointed by Osun State University, Temi E. Ologunorisa, a Professor of Climatologyhas raised alarm over the vulnerability of Nigeria to climate change.
He made this known at the first inaugural lecture of the institution titled “In search of climate justice and equity”. The don said, ‘It has been observed that global climate change will have a strong impact on Nigeria – particularly in areas of agriculture, land use, energy, biodiversity, health and water resources.’ He called on the Federal Government, as a matter of urgency, to establish a National Centre/Institute on Climate Change to nip in the bud, the problem of poor understanding and low level of awareness of the dimensions of contemporary environmental problems particularly climate change.
Professor Alebiosu C. Olutayo, the Provost of the College of Health Sciences at Osun State University has warned the general public to refrain from the consumption of medications without prescriptions. Professor Alebiosu gave this warning while delivering the seventh Inaugural Lecture of the institution titled: ‘Emerging Epidemic of Non-Communicable Diseases – Conspiracy against the kidney’.
