Available Programmes:
B.Sc. Statistics
Brief History:
The Statistics Programme was approved at the inception of the Osun State University, Osogbo in 2007 as one of the programmes to be mounted by the University under the College of Science, Engineering and Technology, and since then serve as a service unit within the University.
In 2019/2020 academic session, the programme was approved by the National University Commission (NUC) under the umbrella of the Department of Mathematical Sciences and began to offer a programme leading to the award of the BSc. (Statistics) degrees.
During the 2021/2022 academic session, the University Management approved the establishment of the Department of Statistics and immediately took off with two (2) Associate Professors of Statistics, Dr. (Mrs) Taiwo A. Ojurongbe and Dr. Kehinde A. BASHIRU and the latter served as the pioneer Acting Head of the Department.
The curriculum developed for the programme seeks to train graduates who will have broad-based knowledge in Statistics. Students will be exposed to both basic and applied courses as well as Statistical analysis and industrial training to enable them to satisfy the manpower needs of different sectors of the Nigerian economy. Our graduates are expected to be able to carry out academic research, as well as do Statistical analyses for other areas of academics.
There are two functional laboratories in the department that serve the academic programmes of the Department, the laboratories are well equipped to cope with the teaching of students and for the use of academic staff for research purposes. Classrooms and lecture rooms are shared with other Departments in the College.
Philosophy:
Among the Departmental basic principles underlying the knowledge of Statistics is to continually respond to the changing imperatives in Statistics and Mathematical Sciences and seek to raise young men and women imbued with the requisite skill, knowledge and competence in Statistics and Statistical Analysis which are tools for Science, engineering, management sciences and technological advancements, and in particular to be the arrowheads of the socio-economic and technological developments of Osun state, Nigeria and the world at large.
Objectives:
The Department is objectively determined to
- Instill in students a sense of enthusiasm for statistics, an appreciation of their application in different areas and to involve them in an intellectually stimulating and satisfying experience of learning and studying.
- Provide students with a broad and balanced foundation of knowledge and practical skills in statistics.
- Develop in students the ability to apply their statistical knowledge and skills to the solution of theoretical and practical problems in statistics.
- Develop in students, through an education in statistics, a range of transferable skills and attitudes that are of value in statistical-related and non-statistical-related employment.
- Provide students with knowledge and skills base from which they can proceed to further in specialized areas of statistics or multidisciplinary areas involving statistics.
- Generate in students an appreciation of the importance of statistics in an industrial, economic, environmental, technological and social context.
Admission Requirements:
General:
For admission into any of the first-degree programmes of the University, a candidate shall be required to possess the following minimum qualifications:

(1) English Language (2) Mathematics and (3) Physics to form the core subjects, and any other two (2) subjects from Chemistry, Biology/Agricultural Science, Economics and Geography. The candidate must also earn an acceptable score in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).
UTME Subject Requirements:
English Language, Mathematics, Physics and any other subject from Chemistry, Biology/Agricultural Science, Economics and Geography
Direct Entry Candidates:
Candidates seeking admission by direct entry into the 200-level Statistics programme, must have Advanced Level passes in at least two (2) of the following: Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry, in addition to credit level passes in five of the subjects listed in 3.2.1 above at the SSCE or its equivalents. Candidates with HND or ND with at least lower credit in relevant subjects may be considered for admission into 200-level. Candidates with acceptable passes in the UNIOSUN JUPEB Programme are also eligible for admission into the 200-level, provided they possess the requisite qualification for entry into the 100 level of the programme.
