Available Programmes:

B.Sc. Statistics

Brief History:

The Statistics Programme was approved at the inception of the Osun State University, Osogbo in 2007 as one of the programmes to be mounted by the University under the College of Science, Engineering and Technology, and since then serve as a service unit within the University.

In 2019/2020 academic session, the programme was approved by the National University Commission (NUC) under the umbrella of the Department of Mathematical Sciences and began to offer a programme leading to the award of the BSc. (Statistics) degrees.

During the 2021/2022 academic session, the University Management approved the establishment of the Department of Statistics and immediately took off with two (2) Associate Professors of Statistics, Dr. (Mrs) Taiwo A. Ojurongbe and Dr. Kehinde A. BASHIRU and the latter served as the pioneer Acting Head of the Department.

The curriculum developed for the programme seeks to train graduates who will have broad-based knowledge in Statistics. Students will be exposed to both basic and applied courses as well as Statistical analysis and industrial training to enable them to satisfy the manpower needs of different sectors of the Nigerian economy. Our graduates are expected to be able to carry out academic research, as well as do Statistical analyses for other areas of academics.

There are two functional laboratories in the department that serve the academic programmes of the Department, the laboratories are well equipped to cope with the teaching of students and for the use of academic staff for research purposes. Classrooms and lecture rooms are shared with other Departments in the College.

 Philosophy:

Among the Departmental basic principles underlying the knowledge of Statistics is to continually respond to the changing imperatives in Statistics and Mathematical Sciences and seek to raise young men and women imbued with the requisite skill, knowledge and competence in Statistics and Statistical Analysis which are tools for Science, engineering, management sciences and technological advancements, and in particular to be the arrowheads of the socio-economic and technological developments of Osun state, Nigeria and the world at large.

Objectives:

The Department is objectively determined to

  1. Instill in students a sense of enthusiasm for statistics, an appreciation of their application in different areas and to involve them in an intellectually stimulating and satisfying experience of learning and studying.
  2. Provide students with a broad and balanced foundation of knowledge and practical skills in statistics.
  • Develop in students the ability to apply their statistical knowledge and skills to the solution of theoretical and practical problems in statistics.
  1. Develop in students, through an education in statistics, a range of transferable skills and attitudes that are of value in statistical-related and non-statistical-related employment.
  2. Provide students with knowledge and skills base from which they can proceed to further in specialized areas of statistics or multidisciplinary areas involving statistics.
  3. Generate in students an appreciation of the importance of statistics in an industrial, economic, environmental, technological and social context.

There are four functional laboratories in the Department that serve the academic programmes of the Department. The laboratories are well equipped to cope with teaching of students and for the use of academic staff for research purposes.

The students registered in the Department offer similar courses at the 100 level but start to offer courses in their chosen disciplines from the 200 level. At the 300 level Rain Semester, all students in the Department are required to proceed on six months Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) as part of their graduation requirement.
The two programmes of the Department operate academic curricular that are tailored along the stipulations contained in the National Universities Commission (NUC) Benchmark Minimum Academic Standards.
