BBC officials arrived at the Main Campus of the University in Osogbo to the warm hands of the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Labode Popoola, who was the Chief Host at the gubernatorial debate that saw more than half a thousand audience who came from far and near fill the Olagunsoye Oyinlola Auditorium, venue of the event to the brim.
The debate conducted in Yoruba was aired live on both BBC Yoruba service and Rave FM, a popular radio station based in Osogbo, the capital of Osun State.
Perfect decorum maintained at the beginning of the debate gradually snowballed into intermittent jeers and cheers from haters and lovers of various ideas being advanced by the four candidates as they responded to questions from the BBC moderator.
The debaters were Gboyega Oyetola, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate; Fatai Akinbade, the All Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate; Moshood Adeoti, the Action Democratic Party (ADP) candidate and Iyiola Omisore who is the candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP).
The governorship candidate of the main opposition party, People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Nurudeen Adeleke was among the candidates invited for the debate. His failure to show up however heightened speculations that his absence might not be unconnected with controversies surrounding his O’ Levels Certificate.
The debate is believed to be capable of shaping the minds of electorates as to who best deserve their votes in the election scheduled to hold on Saturday, 22nd September, 2018.
